Case Study

Fixed IBR with Light Panels — Northriding

Fixed IBR is the most cost-effective roof we build. Dropping translucent panels into the sheeting is what stops it being a dark one.

Location: Northriding, Randburg  ·  System: Fixed IBR Awning + Translucent Light Panels

The brief

A single-storey home with a raised patio wrapping two sides of the house behind a brick-and-stainless balustrade. Windows and doors open onto both elevations.

Fixed IBR is the most cost-effective roof in our range, and it carries the usual objection: a solid sheeted roof over that much glazing makes for dark rooms.

What we built

A fixed IBR awning on a charcoal frame, sheeted in white and across both elevations in three separate sections, each with its own boxed fascia.

Translucent light panels are set into the sheeting in the same profile, so they lock into the surrounding sheets and follow the same lines. Daylight comes through them onto the patio and into the rooms behind, and from the garden they read as part of the roof rather than as skylights added to it.

If this is the shape of what you want, start with Fixed IBR Awnings — or see more from Randburg.

Light panels versus a skylight

A skylight is a framed opening. A light panel is a sheet of the same profile as the roof, in a translucent material, laid in the same run.

That difference is why light panels suit sheeted roofs so well: no separate frame, no upstand, no flashing detail. The roof is simply partly transparent where you want it to be.

The specification behind it

  • Fixed IBR awning, charcoal frame with white sheeting
  • Translucent light panels in matching profile set into the sheeting
  • Three separate sections across two elevations, each with a boxed fascia
  • 95% watertight in Highveld storms, with a full all-round gutter
  • 15-year guarantee on aluminium, 10-year on Chromadek®

Where fixed IBR is the right call

Fixed IBR gets treated as the entry-level option, which undersells it. It uses the same watertight all-round gutter system as our premium range and carries the same guarantee.

What you give up is adjustability and the insulated double-roof build-up. On a wrap-around patio where the main job is weather cover across a long run, that is often the right trade — and the money saved buys the light panels that make it work.

If you’re considering the same

If you are quoting fixed IBR over a patio with windows onto it, ask what light panels cost. It is usually a small proportion of the job and it changes how the rooms behind feel.
