Aluminium fixed IBR awnings for Johannesburg patios
A fixed IBR awning is a patio roof of aluminium IBR sheeting on a powder-coated aluminium frame. It doesn't open and close, and that is why it is the most cost-effective awning in our range, from R2 100 per m² supplied and installed. It runs on the same gutter system as our louvre awnings, looks much like one from the garden, and is custom-made to fit the patio it covers, for homes across Johannesburg and its surrounds.
What a fixed IBR awning gives you
Fixed IBR is the roof to choose when the patio's main job is shelter from sun and rain, across its full width, for the lowest cost in our range. Nothing moves, so there is nothing to operate. The same system is also offered as a carport shade.

Fixed IBR or an adjustable louvre awning?
Both run on the same gutter system. The difference is the roof: one stays put, the other opens.

Light panels in a wrap-around roof
The usual objection to fixed IBR is a dark room behind it. This Northriding home has a raised patio wrapping two sides of the house, with windows and doors onto both. We built the awning in three sections on a charcoal frame with white sheeting, each with its own boxed fascia, and set translucent light panels into the sheeting in the same profile. Daylight reaches the patio and the rooms behind it, and from the garden the panels read as part of the roof.

One span, one post, two sets of sliding doors
A single-storey home with two sets of sliding doors onto a paved patio, both in full sun with no cover. We ran one fixed IBR awning, white throughout, across both openings and carried it on a single post at the outer corner, so nothing stands in front of either door. The gutter sits inside a boxed fascia, with a downpipe taken down at one end.

Four things to ask any fixed IBR installer
What the sheet is made of
IBR is the shape of the sheet, not the metal, and IBR sheeting is widely sold in pre-painted steel. Ask for the sheet and frame material in writing. Ours are aluminium, both of them. How aluminium compares with pre-painted steel.
Where the gutter goes
Ask whether the gutter is built into a boxed fascia or fixed on afterwards. The prices can look similar; the finished roofs don't.
Light for the rooms behind
If windows or doors open onto the patio, ask about translucent light panels at quote stage, before anything is made.
Your measurements
Width, projection and height, in millimetres. Our measurement guide shows where to take each one.
Colours, care and the guarantee
The frame comes in our four standard colours, and the sheeting doesn't have to match it. Northriding pairs a charcoal frame with white sheeting; the sliding-door job is white throughout.
- Clean the gutter and downpipe regularly. Our warranty guarantees fixed IBR waterproof under standard Highveld rainstorms, and that cleaning is a condition of it.
- Wash the frame down with a neutral detergent. The Aluminium Federation of South Africa suggests every three to six months for powder-coated aluminium.
- No solvents or cleaners containing ammonia or hydrocarbons, and only a very low setting on a pressure washer.
- 15-year guarantee on the aluminium, against rust, paint chipping and corrosion.

We confirm every measurement on site before anything is made, and the exact price follows from that.

Yes. On the Northriding job we set translucent light panels into the sheeting in the same profile, so daylight reaches the patio and the rooms behind it. Solar-control sheet options are also available; ask about them when we quote.
Fixed IBR suits a patio that is mainly for shelter, where you want the lowest cost in our range and nothing to operate. A louvre awning suits a patio where you want winter sun and the option to open the roof. Fixed IBR stays closed all year.
Black, Charcoal, Bronze or Traffic White. The frame and the sheeting don't have to match: Northriding has a charcoal frame with white sheeting, and our sliding-door job is white throughout.
Keep the gutter and downpipe clear, particularly before the summer storm season. Wash it down with a neutral detergent, never with solvents or cleaners containing ammonia or hydrocarbons, and keep a pressure washer on a very low setting. Regular cleaning is a condition of the warranty.
