A pergola that closes when the storm comes
An aluminium pergola from Patio Projex is a custom-made aluminium frame with either an adjustable louvre roof or a fixed roof. A traditional pergola breaks the sun and defines a space, but lets rain straight through. With the louvre roof, ours closes against a Highveld storm and opens again when the weather clears; with the fixed roof, it stays closed and has nothing that needs operating. It is the same system we set out under louvre awnings, carried on posts or fixed back to the house to suit your patio, deck or braai area.

Aluminium instead of timber
Traditionally a pergola is a timber structure, and timber is why so many pergolas look tired after a few summers of Highveld sun and afternoon storms. Every pergola we build is powder-coated aluminium: it doesn't rust, it holds its finish without sealing or staining, and it is covered by our 15-year guarantee against rust, paint chipping and corrosion.

From our installations
At Patio Projex, usually yes. What clients call a pergola is most often our adjustable louvre awning: an aluminium frame over the patio with blades that angle for shade, open fully to the sky, and close against rain. If you want the frame with a roof that never moves, we build the same structure with a fixed roof instead.
Choose the louvre roof if you want winter sun on the patio and the option to open the blades over a braai. Choose the fixed roof if the space is mainly for shelter and you would rather have nothing to operate. A fixed roof gives up the winter sun a louvre roof lets in, and it is the more cost-effective of the two.
A traditional pergola lets rain straight through. Our louvre roof closes to form a continuous surface and has a full all-round gutter, which makes it 95% watertight in Highveld storms. The fixed roof uses the same all-round gutter system.
