A patio ceiling is an insulated patio roof that reads as an indoor ceiling from below, and we fit them across Johannesburg, from Sandton to the West Rand and East Rand. It is a double-roof system with a full all-round gutter, and it takes recessed downlights, standard lights, outdoor fans and skylights. Fit the ceiling, close the sides with aluminium doors and windows if you want to, and the patio can become a gym, an office or an entertainment room.
A finished ceiling under a waterproof roof
Our patio ceiling is waterproof and insulated, with a full all-round gutter and double-roof rain protection. From below it looks like a room's ceiling. On the grooved job pictured, the gutter sits inside a boxed fascia and the wiring is hidden above the ceiling, so all you see is the ceiling and the light fittings. An uninsulated patio roof takes the sun's heat and radiates it down onto whoever is sitting under it. A patio ceiling is insulated and built as a double roof, so that heat is held back above the ceiling you look at. That is the difference between a patio that is shaded and one that is comfortable in a Highveld February.
It matters most on a first-floor balcony, where the slab has been in the sun all day and the roof is right above your head.

Skylights where the house needs light
A clear strip along both open edges at Sandown, a skylight band split by the purlins along the house side on our charcoal ceiling, and a whole end bay left clear on another job.
Downlights set into the ceiling
Recessed fittings keep the underside a flat plane: four each at Sandown and Kew, and a run of them along the Radiokop patio. The wiring goes in before the ceiling is closed up.
A grooved finish
On one job the ceiling has a grooved finish, the grooves running from the house wall out to the fascia. The fine, regular line is more forgiving than a large flat plane when low afternoon light rakes across it. See the grooved ceiling.
Two levels, one line

Sandown before, Ruimsig during, both finished
We photographed these two ceiling jobs before they were finished: Sandown before work started, Ruimsig with the frame up. At Sandown a bare pool courtyard became a white insulated ceiling on a single post, with a clear skylight strip along the open edges and four recessed downlights. At Ruimsig a first-floor balcony got a bronze frame with a white ceiling, its posts founded on the balcony parapet.
Close it in and the patio becomes a room
A common next step is to enclose the ceiling with aluminium doors and windows and finish it with downlights, standard lights or outdoor fans, which turns the patio into space for a gym, an office or entertaining. At Kew the patio was walled on both sides and open at the front. We fitted a charcoal-framed insulated ceiling with downlights and closed the garden side with aluminium stack folding doors, both made to one set of site measurements so the junction between them doesn't show.

Frame colours, ceiling finishes and upkeep
Frames come in our four standard colours, and the ceiling doesn't have to match the frame: Benoni has a charcoal frame with a cream ceiling, Ruimsig a bronze frame with a white ceiling, and Sandown is white throughout.
- Clean the gutter and downpipe regularly so they don't overflow. It is a condition of the waterproof guarantee.
- Clean it regularly, which the warranty requires. No solvents or cleaners containing ammonia or hydrocarbons; pressure washers on a very low setting only.

Yes. A common route is to fit the ceiling first and close the sides with aluminium doors and windows. If enclosing is in your plans, price it with the ceiling even if you build it later: at Kew the ceiling and the stack folding doors were made to one set of site measurements.
