Case Study

Frosted Glazed Enclosure — Midrand

An upper terrace closed in on three sides, glazed almost entirely in frosted glass. It is a privacy solution that never needs a curtain.

Location: Midrand  ·  System: Aluminium Enclosure — frosted glazing

The brief

An upper-level terrace, glazed on its long side and looking out over neighbouring roofs.

Clear glass would have needed blinds within a week, and blinds on an enclosure defeat most of the reason for glazing it.

What we built

A charcoal-framed aluminium enclosure running the length of the terrace, glazed in frosted panels: stack folding doors along the main opening and sliding windows alongside them.

Frosted glass throughout means the enclosure keeps its privacy without anything hung behind it.

More on the specification under Patio Enclosures, and more jobs like it across Midrand.

Frosted is a decision about light, not just privacy

Frosted glass gives up the view. On a terrace with something worth looking at that would be the wrong trade, and we would have argued for clear glass and a screen on the one exposed side.

Here the outlook is the neighbours' windows, so nothing is lost and the room gains a soft, even daylight that clear glass with blinds never achieves.

The specification behind it

  • Charcoal-framed aluminium enclosure to an upper terrace
  • Frosted stack folding doors to the main opening
  • Frosted sliding windows alongside
  • Glazing frosted throughout — no blinds or film
  • 15-year guarantee on aluminium, 10-year on Chromadek®

Stack folding and sliding in one opening

They are not interchangeable. Stack folding opens the whole wall, and needs somewhere for the leaves to park when it does. Sliding gives up half the opening permanently but takes no parking space at all and costs less per metre.

A long opening usually wants both: folding where you want the wall gone, sliding where you only ever want ventilation and a view. Which goes where is decided by how the space is used, not by picking a favourite.

If you’re considering the same

Ask what you are actually screening from before choosing frosted. If there is a view worth keeping, clear glass plus screening on one side is usually better.
